Selecting The Proper Size Rivet
Proper forming of the rivet is achieved by selection of the proper rivet length, workpiece hole diameter, and rivet anvil. Rivets are furnished in various increments of length depending upon the rivet diameter. Up to 1/8" diameter, rivets are furnished in 1/64" increments from 9/64" to 3/16" long in 1/32" increments and over 3/16" in 1/16" increments.
The following formula may be used to find the proper rivet length.
RIVET LENGTH = COMBINED WORKPIECE THICKNESS + CLINCH ALLOWANCE *
* Use a clinch allowance of 50 - 70% of the body rivet body (See chart below)
The proper hole diameter is determined by adding a factor of 1.07 to the rivet shank diameter .. or 1.07 x Shank dia. = Hole dia.
